Before becoming a restaurant owner, Robbie was a photographer and location manager/producer in the film industry.

Robbie entered the restaurant world at the age of 14, working in various roles to support his artistic passions. He envisioned a space that would not only serve delicious food but also envelop guests in a warm embrace of “exemplary service and old-world charm,” he shares. Little did he know that his dream project, Café Medina, would lead him to meet his wife—also named Medina! She was drawn in by the café’s inviting sign, and the rest is history.

Since its grand opening in 2008 in downtown Vancouver’s vibrant Library District, Café Medina has established itself as a standout destination for breakfast, lunch, and weekend brunch. It seamlessly blends eclectic bistro fare, connoisseur-quality coffee, and delectable sweet treats, including what many claim are the best Belgian waffles in the city. “We carved out a niche as a truly exceptional spot,” Robbie explains. The name “Medina,” often interpreted in various ways, was chosen for its meaning of “radiant” or “enlightened city.”

For Robbie, the highlight of running his business is the joy of creating unique experiences for guests. “There’s no better feeling than knowing you’ve just made someone’s day… or trip!” he shares. Looking ahead, Robbie is excited to continue serving as an ambassador for the hospitality community, providing a welcoming experience for all. “Café Medina doesn’t just serve food—we pride ourselves on providing sustenance in every way, shape, and form,” he emphasizes.
