CHARLES GAUTHIER LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: DR. JULIO MONTANER
The prestigious Charles Gauthier Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Dr. Julio Montaner. Dr. Montaner is a pioneer in the field of HIV/AIDS research and treatment, recognized globally for his groundbreaking work. As the Director of the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS and the Chair of AIDS Research at the University of British Columbia, his efforts have been instrumental in advancing healthcare and reducing the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. Dr. Montaner’s exceptional leadership extends to his role as the esteemed director of the John Ruedy Immunodeficiency Clinic and as the distinguished Physician Program Director for HIV/AIDS PHC. His steadfast dedication to advancing public health and his tireless advocacy efforts truly distinguish him as the most deserving recipient of this award.
OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUAL AWARD: IAN TOSTENSON
This year’s Outstanding Individual Award is presented to Ian Tostenson, President and CEO of the BC Restaurant and Food Services Association. Ian’s influential leadership has profoundly impacted Vancouver’s hospitality industry, particularly through his advocacy and support for the restaurant sector. His efforts extend beyond business as he actively participates in government relations and policy advocacy, including roles on the Premier’s Permanent Small Business Roundtable and BC’s Climate Team. Ian’s dedication to mentoring, coaching, and supporting small businesses, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlights his remarkable contribution to the community.
OUTSTANDING ORGANIZATION AWARD: VANCOUVER CONVENTION CENTRE
The Outstanding Organization Award is proudly awarded to the Vancouver Convention Centre. As a premier venue for international events, conferences, and exhibitions, the Convention Centre plays a vital role in showcasing Vancouver on the global stage while bolstering the local economy and showcasing downtown businesses. Its commitment to sustainability is equally impressive, being the world’s first double LEED Platinum-certified convention center. Through various community engagement programs and cultural initiatives, the Convention Centre enriches downtown Vancouver and fosters a sense of connection and support, making it a deserving recipient of Downtown Van’s Outstanding Organization award.
EMERGING LEADER AWARD: UYTAE LEE
The Emerging Leader Award honors Uytae Lee, a dynamic city enthusiast and content creator. Through his thought-provoking videos and articles, Uytae illuminates complex topics like housing, transportation, and environmental sustainability, encouraging informed discussions and greater civic engagement. His fresh perspective and creative approach have made important urban issues more understandable and relevant to a wide audience, particularly younger generations. By demystifying city planning and policy, Uytae has empowered many Vancouverites to actively participate in shaping their community. His CBC series, ‘Stories About Here,’ further explores urban topics and highlights the importance of understanding our city’s evolving landscape.
SUSTAINABILITY AWARD: REFILL ROAD
The Sustainability Award is awarded to Refill Road, a zero-waste store dedicated to eco-friendly living. Refill Road champions a refill model that significantly reduces single-use plastic waste and promotes sustainable alternatives. Beyond its environmental efforts, the store actively engages with the community, providing easy access to sustainable products and empowering locals to make environmentally conscious choices. Refill Road’s innovative approach is making a positive impact on reducing plastic pollution and fostering a greener neighbourhood.
