Immerse Yourself in an Indigenous AR Art Walk: A Tribute to Truth and Reconciliation in Downtown Vancouver
In Robson Square Plaza, the heart of vibrant Downtown Vancouver, a celebration of Indigenous culture that marries the old and the new, the traditional and the technological, is taking place. On this Truth and Reconciliation Day, Downtown Van, Slow Studies Creative, and Meta invite you to embark on a groundbreaking journey: the Immersive Perspectives AR Art Walk. Using your phone, step into a world where Indigenous art comes alive through the magic of Augmented Reality and Meta Spark technology, honouring the rich heritage of Indigenous peoples across Canada.
The Immersive Perspective AR Art Walk is free and open to the public at Robson Square Plaza from September 25 to October 6, 2023. It combines the Indigenous cultural arts from across Canada with the cutting-edge technology of Augmented Reality, offering a new perspective on the rich tapestry of Indigenous artistry. This Truth and Reconciliation Day, join us in observing the convergence of tradition and innovation and take a step towards a more inclusive and harmonious future.
Josh Conrad, the Founder and Art Director of Slow Studies Creative, is the visionary behind this project. His core mission is to empower Indigenous creators in this transformative field. Slow Studies Creative partnered with Meta to launch Spark Indigenous: Augmented Reality Creator Accelerator. This five-week program trains 10 Indigenous creators using Meta Spark Studio to integrate interactive AR experiences into their cultural storytelling. Slow Studies Creative agency nurtures equity for program graduates and amplifies the collective voice of Indigenous communities through innovative technologies in XR (Augmented, Mixed, and Virtual Reality).
Josh lives and works on the unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations (Vancouver, BC). He has Stó:lo / Portuguese roots with strong Nlaka’pamux ties and belongs to the Chawathil First Nation on S’ólh Téméxw territory. He is inspired by collaboration, bright colours, and finding ways to bring artworks, stories and messages to life through the – almost – tangible experiences of AR (Augmented Reality).
